Dating Terms and Definitions
We’ve given you a quick list of the new dating terms so you know we are in the KNOW!
Ghosting
When you actively start talking, making plans and dating someone and then one day, after an established relationship they seemingly *poof* disappear, this is when you’ve been ghosted on.
Bread crumbing
Bread crumbing is just what it sounds like, receiving bits and pieces that they are interested but no actual follow through. Bread crumbing leaves you frustrated because you keep getting indications but no plans.
Bot
A robot or fictitious account made to look like a real person on a dating app or event dating site. Way too perfect pictures can be a giveaway that this person is not real.
Catfishing
The term was coined on an MTV show. When you try and pretend to be someone else’s identity in terms of their picture, personal information and continue this lie.
Cuffing Season
(Once phrased as “Wife up for the winter”) Cuffing Season is when a person is looking to find someone before the winter season hits.
Dial-Toning
When someone takes your number and never calls or texts you for plans.
DTR
An acronym for "define the relationship".
Glamboozled
Getting all dressed up for a date that cancels at the last minute.
Hatfishing
A specific type of catfishing in which a user tries to hide their hair (or lack thereof) and wears a hat in every picture on their online profile.
Kanye'd
Talking about yourself all of the time.
Kittenfishing
Like Catfishing, Kittenfishing is like using pictures that aren’t accurate, exaggerating your talents and successes.
Sliding into their DMs
Besides Lizzo's songs discussing this; this a phrase "to flirt online". DM is the abbreviation for direct message, which is a way to privately reach out to someone you follow on social media.
Submarining
The sequel to once you’ve been ghosted! You’ve gone on a handful of dates and this person disappears. They then text or contact you as if nothing happened. It’s like going up and down in submarine where they suddenly resurface back to land.
Swipe left
This is a phrase to indicate that you do not have interest in that person's profile.
Swipe right
This is a phrase to indicate that you are interested in that person's profile to be a potential match.
Zombieing
Zombieing is similar to ghosting, but this time the person is trying to come back in your life after being gone for a while it’s like they are coming “back from the dead”.
